Class Description

BLING?RING is an intensive workshop focused on the making of rings, from basic form to elaborate iterations. As an element of jewelry, the ring is specific in the sense that it is the only article of adornment that is appreciated equally by the wearer and by the spectator. Because of this, the ring has a specific cultural power. Rings can be simple. Rings can be elegant. Rings can be gaudy, or explosive, or unwieldy, or fun… The format of the ring, the relation of the object to a human hand, has the ability to express a breadth of ideas and creative sentiments  – for the maker, wearer, and viewer.

BLING?RING is a course directed towards both beginners and advanced students of jewelry alike. Its starts with the fundamentals of metalsmithing and quickly elaborates into constructing unique creative solutions – challenging what a ring can be. Students will be guided through group tutorials and individual instruction to complete a series of quick projects that will ultimately result in finished rings. Stones, found objects, and other precious ephemera will be integrated into designs, focusing on clever solutions to create expressive rings.

Through his work, Adam Grinovich utilizes limited materials and craft techniques to create complex structures that are influenced by tradition, contemporary culture, glamour, and luxury. BLING?RING is an extension of his philosophy of working with minimal methods to produce elaborate results. Beginning students will be introduced to the process of working with metal and precise fabrication. Advanced students will be taught specific techniques to create rings, experimental settings, and advanced fabrication in a variety of metals.

This workshop’s teaching assistant is Annika Pettersson.
