This 8 week class focuses on the development of critical thinking skills while exploring the role of writing in a studio-based practice. We will pay close attention to the varied contexts our work–and related writing–exists within. In-class dialog centers around assigned readings, exhibitions (visited as a group or individually), and self-generated writing. Written texts will be generated in the form of artist statement, manifesto, review, and/or critique while creative exercises such as automatic writing and prompts will intensify our process.
This course is ideal for those who wish to establish or reinforce a positive feedback loop between a studio and writing practice, as well as those who are filled with dread at the mere thought of writing an artist statement. It is not necessary to be a maker–or currently making–to participate in this class; assignments and texts can take the form of review or critique.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT A STUDIO-BASED COURSE.
Any admission fees or field trip costs that may arise will be the responsibility of the student.
Withdrawals from class 7 days prior to the start of the class will receive a full refund for the class minus a 5% processing fee. If cancellation occurs 3-6 days prior to the class, we will provide a 50% refund. Cancellations 48 hours or less receive a 25% refund. Refunds will not be provided for no-shows or same-day cancellations.
We do not refund tuition for classes that students miss due to their own circumstances. Students enrolled in multi-session studio courses (excluding workshops and intensives) may make-up missed class sessions during open studio hours for up to two weeks after the last class meeting.
We reserve the right to cancel or discontinue any class, in which case you may choose to receive a refund, apply the class credit towards a different course, or receive a tuition credit for future use. Tuition credits are valid for up to one year. Refunds will be issued within 30 days.
