Class Description

This course will explore jewelry design techniques, fashion trends, and style influencers from 1880 until now. Kendra Pariseault will walk students through the couture jewelry of the past and today, discussing the social and political climates which influenced each period’s trends in materials, design motifs, and usage of stones. We’ll start our discussion with the patrons, royal families, design houses, and fashions that made Europe the leader in high jewelry, and will progress to examine how these elements spread internationally in the 20th century. The main design periods we will study are the Belle Epoque, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro, Modern and Contemporary. Students will be able to identify the major fashion houses and will be able to recognize each period’s design elements.

Class will be lecture-based at Brooklyn Metal Works. We will host optional additional excursions, including a tour of New York City’s Diamond District, the collections at The Museum of Modern Art and possibly the major design houses and galleries throughout the city.
