Class Description

This six-week course is a comprehensive introduction to the art of engraving as it relates to jewelry. Using both hand-engraving and air-assisted methods, students will develop an in-depth understanding of the tools used in engraving and the control that’s required for carving into metal surfaces. Processes such as tool sharpening, image/mark development, design transferring, and general surface finishing techniques will be developed through a variety of exercises. Engraving demands complete attention and awareness. This course will allow students to experience greater intimacy with their work by practicing this intense focus, and give them the skills to incorporate drawing and mark-making into their practice.

This course is open to all levels. Basic jewelry fabrication skills may be helpful for the final piece, but not required to enroll in this class.

Class size 4-6 students. Masks are required for studio coursework.

Taught by Valerie James
All students receive a 50% discount on hourly bench rentals throughout the duration of their course.
