Sept 1 - Oct 20
Class Description

This 8 session course offers more advanced waxworking techniques for those who would like to carve intricately designed wax models in the round.

Students will begin by plotting designs onto paper and transferring drawings onto curved surfaces for carving in the round. Special attention will be given to organic structures and intricate surfaces to enliven your designs. Subtractive carving for this course will be taught using burs with the flex shaft, and detailing using hand carving tools and techniques. Surface embellishments using additive wax processes will also be taught.

The main focus of this course will be to design and carve center stone rings for round and oval faceted gems. Design transfer, wax carving, wax model preparation, and metal finishing will be taught.

Students must have prior wax carving experience and familiarity with gemstones.  Preparation for stone setting techniques will be discussed as they apply to student’s designs, but stone setting processes will not be taught.

Metal casting for this class is outsourced and will be the responsibility of the student.

Class size 4 – 12 students. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination required. Masks are required to be worn for all studio coursework.

There is a supply kit available for purchase through our Tool Shop. Materials will be available for pick up during your first class.
