Class Description

So you just bought a new hammer and it didn’t come with a mirror polish!?!? Someone just gave you a box of rusty tools that you think you can use but don’t know how to clean them. That rawhide mallet is leaving marks on your metal, but it’s brand new so what gives? Your flex shaft used to run great but now it is making weird sounds. Does any of this sound familiar?

Learning how to maintain your tools is one of the most important aspects of keeping a shop running smoothly. It saves you money and conserves resources too. A sustainable shop knows how to get the most out of its tools and equipment and this starts with understanding basic repair and maintenance.

In this 5 session hands on course Brian Weissman will take students on a journey through their tools. Each session students will work on tools that need a little love to be their best selves. Bring in your own tools or work with the ones onsite. Topics include rehandling, repairing and polishing hammers, sharpening scribes and scrapers, de-rusting files and other steel, polishing burnishers and dressing bezel pushers, fixing dapping tools, cleaning torch tips and flex shaft maintenance.

Bring your questions and an old tool to each class and learn how to keep your studio and your projects happy for a long time to come.

Class size 4 – 12 students. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination required. Masks are required to be worn for all studio coursework.
