Full Circle: Necklace | Jewelry Focus

Class Description

Taught by NAAMA LEVIT

8 week course (meets once a week for 3 hours)

This class will focus on planning and executing a single project: crafting a full-length, wearable, and functional necklace by assembling a series of interconnected elements.

Creating a necklace involves a multifaceted approach where various aspects come together. We begin by considering visual design elements and parameters, including the necklace's length, symmetry, balance, and spacing of elements, all of which significantly influence its aesthetic appeal and functionality. Simultaneously, we will address comfort and wearability, taking into account aspects such as weight distribution, the smoothness of components against the skin, and overall flexibility. Ensuring structural integrity and durability is also crucial, requiring careful planning and proficient attachment of components like clasps, jump rings, and connectors. The finished piece should demonstrate quality workmanship to ensure its durability for daily wear and long-term aesthetic appeal. This demands careful attention to detail and precision.

The initial segment of the class will be dedicated to the exploration of various techniques through class demonstrations and sample creation. We will delve into different wirework methods, including drawing plates, hammer forging, and rolling mills. Sheet metal, that could become a hollow form, or create repeating systems, or incorporate other building techniques, will be explored. Various wire pattern samples will be introduced. Students will practice rivet-making and explore alternative ways to interlock elements. Additionally, we will cover silver soldering techniques, utilizing the little torch (oxygen torch), and gain understanding of different finishing methods. Two archetypal clasp styles will be introduced: the toggle and the S-hook.

Throughout the class, ample time will be allocated for individual planning, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and guidance to assist participants in successfully completing their projects. This class is a great opportunity for individuals with basic skills who are self-driven and want to take on a full-length project while expanding their fabrication skills.

Class size 4 – 12 students. Basic jewelry fabrication skills, including soldering and torchwork, is required.

Early Bird Special pricing will be in effect until January 10th, when pricing will increase to $580.
