Jewelry Focus | Hello, Bezel

Class Description

Taught by Odette Channell

Whether by new introduction or looking to become more familiar, getting to know this time honored stone setting technique is a worthwhile effort. The bezel is everyone’s friend.

Bezels are thin strips of metal that completely encircle a stone to hold it perfectly in place. Both cabochons and faceted stones can be bezel set using different fabrication approaches. Further customizing the shape of the setting allows for the personality of the stone to be revealed. Bezels are strong and secure and with the right adjustments can offer a whole new visual appeal to your jewelry.

In this 8 session course you will learn how to create bezel settings for faceted and cabochon gemstones. We will go over design constraints for various jewelry elements, and how to build a more complex setting with confidence. Curvilinear, straight-sided, and cornered shapes will be covered during the three course projects - tube set stacking rings, a sharp cornered pendant, and step bezels for oval earrings.

As projects are introduced advanced students will have the option to increase the difficulty of their designs. Basic tool modification will be taught. Class discussions will also cover gemstone buying and gemstone resources along with in-class presentations of gem materials.

This course is for those with basic jewelry fabrication knowledge as well as more advanced practitioners who want an in depth and varied understanding of these techniques. Prior stone setting skills required.

Class size 4 – 12 students.

All students receive a 50% discount on hourly bench rentals throughout the duration of their course.
