The Essential Prong
Class Description
Taught by Odette Channell
Learning how to set gemstones into metal jewelry is an essential part of becoming a jeweler. In this introductory stone setting class, students will learn an overview of how to set stones in basic prong settings. Take the next step in your jewelry journey in this 8 session course dedicated to this fundamental and exciting process!
Starting with a twist on a tube setting, students will create a crown set ring and learn to cut a seat for a faceted stone. Next, the following project will bring greater soldering challenges and center around a cabochon of their choice. And finally, through bur use and refined soldering techniques, students will learn to build a classic pendant with basket setting. Over the course of the class, students will walk away with a basic understanding of how to secure stones, and increased proficiency in soldering and bur use, as well as gain confidence to design around settings.
Students must have prior foundational stone setting experience before taking this course. Our Essential Bezel class offers this introduction.
