“Petra Zimmermann draws on past encounters with costume jewellery from the previous century for her rings, bracelets and brooches. Comprised of bright, colourful synthetic forms these objects receive a framework, in which their artificial appearance contrasts to the dusty splendour of the historic costume jewellery. Thus beguiling pieces of jewellery emerge, which combine the present fascination for glamour with an element of progression, thus referencing the costume jewellery as an essential component in the production and construction of glamour in the portrait photography of the Hollywood diva.
In her latest series of works the artist uses mass media images of models, floral motifs, architecture and design objects, which broaden her scope of cultural and social interpretations. Thus behind the visual opulence of her work she succeeds in handling relevant aesthetic and social themes in her pieces – relevant for a generation that no longer struggles against traditional conventions, but that negotiates much more in an increasingly complex environment, in the search for personal and historical coherence.”
– Petra Bäuerle, Schmuck Magazine 8/2011
Opening reception at Ornamentum Gallery October 26th
“Condenser is a series of one-off rings pretending to serve an alternative functional purpose. The jewellery explores the meaning of function in general, and specifically in relation to jewellery and tools. The jewellery is made to resemble tools and is visually perceived as such, but essentially, it is simply jewellery. The form expression has references to funnels, drinking bowls, cups, handles and bowls for collecting dew or liquids in connection with condensation etc.
Danish wood types are used in the design. The point is to demonstrate that jewellery can be much more than anonymous classics in gold with diamonds, and that the jewellery we choose to wear expresses who we are and how we want to be perceived.”
-Mette Saaybe
In her work, Mette Saabye attempts to explore and define the meaning and function of jewellery. One of the fundamental premises of jewellery is function, but how should this be understood, and can it be defined more specifically?
She asks questions and challenges common perceptions of jewellery by examining its wide range of possible applications and various forms of inherent value. Her jewellery can be illusory, carry memories and recollections and hold material value and multiple functions. In addition, the jewellery also serves as a means of interpersonal communication. Characteristically, Mette Saabye always operates with multiple layers of meaning. The content determines both her idiom and her choice of materials. Mette Saabye finds it interesting to combine natural and imitated materials and to process them to enter into a logical context. She finds inspiration in her close surroundings and in art and science.
Gallery Loupe and Brooklyn Metal Works present an artist talk and demonstration by Attai Chen.
Blowpipe Torch Demo
Attai Chen will be demonstrating one of his favorite tools, the “blowpipe torch”. This torch allows Chen to build the delicately hollow forms that were showcased in his Forgotten Things series. Due to the slow and repetitive nature of this tool, Chen utilizes the technique to replicate natural growing processes. By fusing and soldering thin layers of silver on top of one another Chen creates natural forms that are extremely lightweight and durable. For this demo Chen will also show the use of enamels with the torch in the development of the aesthetic of the final form.
Attai Chen recently wrote about his favorite tool for the AJF blog. You can read the piece here and see a picture of the torch.
