Our Studio

Brooklyn Metal Works (BKMW) is a 5,000-square-foot, fully equipped professional metalsmithing studio that offers space for use by jewelers and metal artists in addition to a wide variety of classes and workshops taught by professional artists. Our courses range in skill level from beginner to advanced.

BKMW is committed to providing safe working and learning environments, complete with a wide inventory of tools and equipment. This collaborative setting fosters exploration, encourages experimentation, and strengthens the knowledge of all involved.

Brooklyn Metal Works aims to promote the field of metalsmithing and to further critical dialogue among those who practice, write, and invest time and energy into the field. Our gallery space regularly hosts exhibitions by contemporary artists and guest curators, with an ongoing artist lecture series featuring artists from across the globe.

Brooklyn Metal Works is artist owned and operated and we appreciate your support!

Membership

Brooklyn Metal Works is a shared metalsmithing studio for professional artists. Membership is required to access studio time and is contingent on prior metalsmithing training. If you are a jeweler or metalsmith who has the necessary experience and education to work safely and independently, BKMW membership is right for you. Classes are required for those who wish to work in the studio but have never practiced metalsmithing.

Members have access to all BKMW studio tools and equipment as long as they have been trained to use them. A list of tools and equipment is available below. New members are required to attend a studio orientation and review a safety contract before working in the studio. Members are responsible for replacing or repairing materials and equipment that they damage.

Membership is $100 per year. This fee goes towards the purchase of materials for general studio use, as well as for the maintenance and repair of tools and equipment. Our members also receive discounts on classes, workshops, and events.

All levels of studio use are available to members of Brooklyn Metal Works. By becoming a member you will be able to access studio and locker space, have the opportunity to show work in our yearly membership exhibition, and enjoy discounts from select vendors.

The application helps us to determine whether the work you are interested in making - i.e. fine jewelry, silver art objects or large scale steel sculpture - is appropriate for our space. It also ensures that those who work in the studio have been trained to do so, for the safety of everyone.

We are always accepting new member applications!
